As a homesteader, I have little use for gadgets that sit on the shelf and collect dust, unless they are of sentimental value. I’ve always preferred warm socks over an expensive necklace, or practical, multi-use canning jars over a fancy vase.
I love to get gifts that make my gardening or kitchen work easier and more efficient. And I love durable gifts that last for more than a few seasons. And then I really like those that combine beauty with function. If your mom prefers practical gifts too, you’ll love this list of useful gift ideas for moms!
Best Mother’s Day Gifts

Making mom feel special does not need a gift. There are so many ways to express your appreciation for Mom. Helping her with tasks, cooking a meal for her, treating her to a fun day out, all can make mom feel special. I used to love getting some fresh picked flowers from right outside the door, presented by pudgy little hands and with a big smile. That was priceless!
However, there are ways to make mom’s life easier with some thoughtful tools and helpful gifts. And for this reason I’ve collected some of my favorites that I know will appeal to any garden loving or homesteading mom. Don’t miss my top favorites, number 4, 16, and 19
Best Mother’s Day Gifts For The Garden
01 The Perfect Sun Protection Hat!
When you’re out in the hot sun all day, it really helps to have a pretty hat with a large brim to keep the sun from trying to make wrinkles in your face or worse. This sunhat is from farmer’s defense. It’s got a wide brim, neck protection and a pretty lining with a convenient strap to keep it from blowing off in a gust of wind. It is machine washable!

02 These Sleeves Are A Game-changer
If your mom is prone to rashes from leaves touching her bare arms, or if her arms scratch easily when harvesting zucchini and other vegetables that have abrasive leaves, you need to get her these gardening sleeves. They are breathable, protect from UV exposure and they will keep her arms itch and scratch free.

03 Must Have Gloves For Pruning Roses And Briars
Whether your mom’s dealing with a blackberry invasion in the garden, or she is growing a beautiful rose garden, these gloves add an effective layer of protection. These handy gloves are great for weeding briars and nettles and pruning any kind of thorny bushes.
I started using gloves like these many years ago when battling invasive blackberries, and last year I ordered a pair of these comfortable leather gloves that work even better. There are so many ‘pokey weeds’ around here and these gloves keep my hands and arms protected.

04 Easy Peasy Harvesting Apron
My favorite harvesting container is an old basket that I found at a thrift store a few years ago. It’s unravelling a little, but still holding on just fine. But I often wished that I had a pouch on me as well, when I get into tight spaces or to keep some things like green beans separate from the greens when harvesting. This apron is a perfect solution. It keeps the hands free and has lots of room for a good amount of vegetables or fruits. I think this would make a super gift for any gardening mom.

05 The Best Classic Hand Pruners
My favorite pruners and probably everyone’s favorite pruners, who owns them, are these Felcos! If your mom is struggling with cheap pruners that don’t cut through branches easily and hurt the hands, these Felcos would make the job much easier. I use my long handled Fiscars for the thicker branches and my Felcos for all the smaller branches and some garden pruning too. These would make a great gift for a gardening mom!

06 The Best Long-Handled Pruners
While I love my Felcos for pruning smaller twigs, some of the thicker branches need long-handled pruners. My favorite long-handled pruners are these Fiscars. I’ve been using these for almost 10 years. I ruined one a few years ago by accidentally cutting into a piece of hidden barbed wire, which made a gouge into the blade. Dang. I had to promptly get another one. It is just so handy for everyday tougher cuts. I highly recommend these for fruit trees and even tougher garden cleanup.

07 Handy Light Duty Pruners
Here is an inexpensive garden pruning shear assortment. I love having a few of these light duty pruners handy throughout the gardening season. I usually carry a couple around in my basket for pruning tomato plants, harvesting peppers, cutting back unruly sweet potato vines, clipping off zucchini, cucumbers, and watermelons and more. And this is one of those gifts that are great to have more than one of, because they have so many other uses too.

08 Super Helpful Garden Tool Caddy
This handy tool caddy and carry bag is such a great option for keeping all your smaller garden tools in one place and for having what you need when you get in your garden. I often have to make several trips to go find this or that tool, because I didn’t think to bring it. This wastes precious time, especially when I have to go looking for it, because I don’t remember where I left it. I love this caddy that has everything organized and in one place.

09 Rest For The Back And Knees
What an awesome little bench for gardening. How many times have I wished I could just sit for a few minutes while pruning or harvesting and rest my back. And kneeling on hard ground is hard on the knees. This tool is so versatile, not only can it be used it in the garden, it also makes a great seat for fishing and camping or an extra seat for company. This would make a super nice gift especially for an older gardening mom.

10 My Favorite Help With Heavy Loads
What would I do without my gorilla cart. My trusted, daily companion for accomplishing chores around the homestead. It hauls buckets full of water, firewood, feed bags, hay bales, potting soil, trays of plants for transplanting, compost materials, my heavy fence puller, fence post pounder, and so much more. As I get older, I rely on it more and more to save my back. This would make a great gift for a gardening and homesteading mom.

11 My Favorite Dutch Oven
Super functional and versatile, this pot will hold your 5 pound chicken, a large family sized sourdough bread and plenty of casserole or stew for a large family. I love my classic black cast iron Dutch Ovens. I have both, a 5 quart and 7 quart size and I use both of them a lot! It’s a great gift that will last for decades. If you prefer the 5 quart size, just remember to select it you add it to your cart. Also, there is a double dutch version available in the 5 quart size, so the lid can be used as a skillet.

12 The Beautiful Dutch Oven
I love Lodge cookware, and who doesn’t love a beautiful enameled cast iron dutch oven. This one is a 6 quart size. This will cook Mom’s delicious soups, casseroles, roasts, and roasted vegetables and it will look awesome, served right in the Dutch Oven. A Dutch Oven is also great for making bone broth, rendering lard, tallow, and more. What a lovely gift this would make!

14 Finally! Wholesome, Healthy Ice Cream!
Does your family love ice cream? It’s so fun to gather around and scoop homemade, fresh churned ice cream for everyone. This ice cream maker is such an improvement over the rock salt version, which is awesome if you’re off-grid. But if you have a freezer and electricity, this kind is much less messy and you don’t end up with a lot of concentrated salt brine to dump.
Why make your own? Read the ingredients on ice cream containers, and it will be a list of toxic chemicals. It’s not the wholesome dairy product that it is being marketed as. I make ice cream all summer long with ingredients I feel good about. I think the mom you’re buying for will appreciate this tool for making fun and healthy ice cream treats for the family.

15 Versatile and Beautiful Apothecary Jars
Here are my favorite fermentation jars. You don’t even need to get any fermentation lids with these jars. And they are awesome for storing dry goods! They make great cookie jars and they look beautiful on the shelf. There are 5 sizes, including my favorites, the 3 quart and the pint size.

16 My favorite Dough Mixer
If your mom loves to mix cookie, cake or bread doughs, she needs this dough whisk. I’ve used mine so much since I bought it. It’s so easy to blend bread dough, cake dough and cookie dough without having to break out the electric tools. It feels great in the hand, it’s sturdy and does a quick job at mixing even heavy doughs like when making a no-knead bread. Highly recommend.

17 The Best Ever Pressure Canner
This is an investment. It is one of those items, that you will want to consider if the Mom you’re buying for is serious about preserving her own food and lots of it. She won’t need this if she’s just water-bath canning a few occasional jars of jam or pickles. And for occasional pressure canned foods, a cheaper and smaller Presto will work. However, if she’s big on putting up food for the year, this All American will be an awesome gift for her. If you do decide to purchase it, you can be sure that it will be an heirloom item that will survive more than one generation.
I’m linking below to the 25 quart, which is the one I own. The 25 quart fits 19 pints or 7 quarts at one time. These pressure canners have a weighted gauge and no seal. So there is less that needs to be replaced if anything. Maybe the little overpressure plug after some time.
Here is a link to a 30 quart All American, which will hold 19 pints and 14 quarts on two levels. This one I couldn’t find on Amazon. It’s $499.- at Lehman’s.

18 The Ultimate Kitchen Helper
A great kitchen workhorse that can help with so many tasks. Strong enough to mix a large batch of Artisan Bread and great for mixing dough for cakes, ground meat, and more. It has lots of attachment options too, like a pasta maker. This is the one you want if the mom you’re buying for likes to make a lot of heavy or large batch baked goods and especially breads. I found a 5 quart size too small and not powerful enough for making my dutch oven sized breads.

19 The Cutting Board Of Your Mom’s Dreams
Here is one of the items that has been on my wishlist for a long time. I don’t own it, but I look at it all the time, wishing. One of these days I’ll have to break down and add this to my meager collection of cutting boards. It’s so beautiful, it’s big, it’s made in America, and it’s made to last.
I wanted to include this because I think it would be a beautiful gift for any mom. It makes a handsome charcuterie board and will serve a holiday roast or turkey in style. And then she can use it every day to cut vegetables, make bread dough, roll out pasta dough, and more.
I love this board! It’s a perfect gift for mom, something she’d not spend the money on, because, although its highly practical, it’s a bit upscale, but hey, she deserves it, right?
